Big Ten going to East-West alignment for divisions

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP) — No more "Legends." And no more "Leaders."

The Big Ten is giving them the boot and following a more traditional route for its division names.

The conference is going with "East" and "West" instead and switching to a nine-game scheduling format after presidents and chancellors approved the moves on Sunday.

The new division alignments will begin in 2014 when Rutgers and Maryland join the conference, meaning "Legends" and "Leaders" will be a thing of the past. That will probably come as good news for fans who have criticized those names ever since the league unveiled them in 2010. To many, they were confusing and didn't help identify where teams play, but that won't be an issue any more.

Besides the new division alignment, teams will go from playing eight conference games to nine in 2016.

"Big Ten directors of athletics concluded four months of study and deliberation with unanimous approval of a future football structure that preserved rivalries and created divisions based on their primary principle of East/West geography," commissioner Jim Delany said in a statement. "The directors of athletics also relied on the results of a fan survey commissioned by BTN last December to arrive at their recommendation, which is consistent with the public sentiment expressed in the poll."

Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers will be in the East division. The West will consist of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin.

School will play six division games plus two against teams from the other division in 2014 and 2015. In 2016, they'll play three cross-division games.

Indiana and Purdue will meet on an annual basis.

East division teams will host five conference games during even-numbered years starting in 2016, with West teams hosting five in odd-numbered seasons. Under that format, teams will be guaranteed to play each other at least once every four years.

"Big Ten directors of athletics met in person or by conference call six times from December to March to discuss a new Big Ten football model," Delany said. "The level of cooperation and collaboration was reflective of what we've come to expect from this group of administrators who have worked extremely well together on a number of complex matters over the past several years. We are all looking forward to ushering in this new era of Big Ten football."

James leads Heat over Bucks and into next round

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Miami's Big Three finally have their sweep.

LeBron James scored 30, Ray Allen had another big game against his old team and the Miami Heat advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals with an 88-77 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday. It's the first time the Heat have swept a playoff series since James and Chris Bosh joined Dwyane Wade in Miami three years ago.

And the Heat didn't even need Wade to do it. The guard missed only the second postseason game of his career, and first since 2005, with three bone bruises on his right knee.

But the Heat still won handily, winning their fourth straight game by double digits.

Wade will get plenty of time to rest now, too. The Heat will face the winner of the Brooklyn Nets-Chicago Bulls series — Chicago leads 3-1 — but the next round won't begin until next Saturday.

Goal for Jets' Geno Smith: to be 'a franchise QB'

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Geno Smith has put that agonizingly long wait in the green room at the NFL draft far behind him.

He's got better things to think about now. And, the New York Jets' second-round pick sure has his sights set pretty high.

"My goal is to be a franchise quarterback," the former West Virginia quarterback declared Saturday. "But as of now, there's lots of work to be done."

The Jets certainly would like to see that happen soon, especially since it appears the last player they drafted expecting to assume that label — Mark Sanchez — has struggled mightily the last two seasons and could be on his way out.

New York drafted its quarterback of the future Friday night, stunning many who thought the Jets might go with Sanchez and David Garrard in training camp and play out the season. With Smith suddenly in the mix, the future could be now.

"My job is to compete," Smith said at his introductory news conference at the team's practice facility.

Smith might be in line already to start, even though the Jets have six quarterbacks on the roster with Smith, Sanchez, Garrard, Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms. But soon, Tebow and/or Sanchez could be gone.

"We talked about that just a little bit as far as reps," offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. "I know you can do it with three, now there's got to come a time where you need to make a choice, the timing is important as well. So everything we do is important. It's got to be very well thought out and very well planned."

Mornhinweg said he has spoken to Sanchez about the team's decision to draft Smith — and, in effect, putting his job and spot on the Jets' roster in jeopardy.

"He understands this is a competition now, so let's rock and roll," Mornhinweg said. "Here, we have four, even more, maybe six, and I hope they're all thinking, 'Hey, I have an opportunity to go win a job.'"

Smith, who hadn't heard from any of the team's other quarterbacks yet, impressed Mornhinweg at dinner the night before his pro day a few weeks ago — and then again on the field throwing the ball around. He raved to coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik about his time with Smith, and it appeared there would be a chance the Jets would go after him in the first round.

Instead, New York went with cornerback Dee Milliner at No. 9 and then defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson at No. 13.

"I got word that it was between Sheldon and myself," Smith said. "But they chose Sheldon, and he's actually a good friend of mine, so I was happy for him."

After slipping past the Jets, Smith continued to fall through the opening round and wasn't happy about it. TV cameras caught him scowling, appearing frustrated and embarrassed as one name after another was called — and not his.

"It was kind of tough to stomach," he acknowledged.

He considered going home the next morning, but decided to return to Radio City Music Hall and wait until he was finally drafted.

"I see it as a blessing in disguise," Smith said. "The main reason for coming back was, I came out the first day to represent my university and my family, and I didn't want the perception to be made that I'm bitter I wasn't selected in the first round and let all those people down who support me.

"So, I made sure I came back and walked across that stage."

Smith leaned on his family as well as his faith to get through those frustrating early moments, saying that if he was meant to go in the first round, he would have gone then.

"The focus is not where you start," Smith said, "but where you finish."

Smith, who owns almost all of West Virginia's passing records, gets rid of the ball quickly, can make completions on the run and is capable of making big plays — something the Jets sorely lacked last season. He threw for 11,662 yards — including back-to-back 4,000-yard seasons — 98 touchdowns and only 21 interceptions in four years at West Virginia.

But there were still some reservations about Smith being an elite-type quarterback who could carry a franchise. Smith had some accuracy problems and also fumbled the ball an alarming 32 times. Contributing to those doubts was a subpar performance at the Pinstripe Bowl in the snow at Yankee Stadium, a 38-14 loss to Syracuse in which Smith took two safeties and was hardly the dominant presence he had been throughout the season when he threw 42 touchdown passes and just six interceptions. Scouts also questioned his overall skills in some predraft reports.

"We don't care about anybody else's evaluations," said Mornhinweg, who thinks Smith will be fine in his West Coast-style offense. "We only care about ours."

Smith was equally resolute: "You know what," he said, "critics don't have a pick."

Smith will take the playbook he received from the coaches and study it over the next two weeks before he returns in two weeks for rookie camp. Then, he'll get out on the field and the Jets will go from there.

"Our goal," Mornhinweg said, "is, 'Hey, let's see how fast we can do this thing and get you ready to go, so you can function at a high level.'"

Smith has no problem with the expectations, and he thinks his ability to read offenses and change plays at the line of scrimmage in college helped him develop his ability and confidence.

"I was given a tremendous amount of freedom," he said. "The coaches and the rest of the staff really trusted me with the offense. Week in and week out, I was a part of putting together the game plans. I think it helped me grow over the course of the last two years."

Celts top Knicks 97-90 in OT, avoid playoff sweep

BOSTON (AP) — Jason Terry scored Boston's last nine points and the Celtics weathered a strong comeback by the New York Knicks, avoiding a sweep with a 97-90 overtime win on Sunday.

Paul Pierce led the Celtics with 29 points as they forced a fifth game in the series, but it was Terry who provided the finishing touches.

In Game 3, he had been elbowed by J.R. Smith, and the NBA suspended the Knicks guard for Sunday's game.

New York had tied the game 84-84 after trailing by 20 points early in the third quarter. It was 88-all before the Celtics regained control and took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Terry. Carmelo Anthony, who led the Knicks with 36 points, hit a short jumper, but Terry connected on a 15-footer with 50 seconds remaining for a 93-90 lead.

After Anthony missed a 3-pointer with 21 seconds to go, Terry was fouled and sank both free throws. He added a layup to close out the game.

Chargers take Manti Te'o in 2nd round of NFL draft

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manti Te'o made it to the NFL a day later than he expected, motivated to play well because he was snubbed in the first round of the draft.

Unconcerned about a hoax involving a fake girlfriend and a flop in the national championship game that have dogged Te'o for four months, San Diego Chargers rookie general manager Tom Telesco moved up seven spots in the second round to draft the Notre Dame linebacker on Friday night.

"I did expect to go in the first round. But things happened and all it did was give me more motivation to get better," Te'o said in a conference call with reporters.

Te'o had spent Thursday with family members in Hawaii, watching the first round of the draft and waiting for a phone call that never came.

That call came Friday.

"I don't know if I have something to prove, but it definitely puts a huge fire under my butt to just be better," Te'o said. "Again, that's the best thing that ever could happen to me. I'm already naturally a motivated person who just wants to be the best. All yesterday did was just give me more motivation and more fire to just go out there and play football and do well at it."

Te'o visited the Chargers before the draft, giving Telesco and rookie head coach Mike McCoy the chance to ask him about the issues.

"He handled it great," Telesco said.

Were the Chargers bothered by the scrutiny Te'o has been under?

"Obviously not. We took him," Telesco said. "We did our due diligence. All that stuff is not a concern to us. So we're just really, really excited to get him here. He took that Notre Dame program and kind of raised the talent level of the whole program. He was the undisputed leader there. We saw that.

"As a player, as a playmaker, he's instinctive. We can't wait to get him on the field."

Telesco said the Chargers had Te'o rated as a first-rounder. They needed an inside linebacker because Takeo Spikes was released and Demorrio Williams is a free agent.

Telesco got Arizona's second-round pick, No. 38, in exchange for San Diego's second- (No. 45) and fourth-round (No. 110) picks.

"We knew somebody may come up to get him. It was strictly just a judgment, a gut call," Telesco said. "Can we wait any longer? We made the move up to get him. Could we have waited? You just never know. We thought the value was there as far as giving up that pick to go get him."

Before being hired by the Chargers, Telesco was in the Indianapolis Colts' front office and had seen Te'o play several times.

"He's one of the finest kids I've met," Telesco said. "He loves football, is passionate about it. He's a leader. He was a leader at Notre Dame, not only on the football team, but on that campus."

Two officials, each with a different team, said their clubs passed on Te'o in the first round partly because of his off-field issues. The men, speaking on condition of anonymity because team draft strategy is confidential, said the decision was not just because of a disappointing combine performance or the linebacker's poor performance in the national title game.

The Heisman Trophy runner-up became the butt of national jokes after it was revealed he was duped into an Internet romance he had with a girlfriend he never met.

The too-good-to-be-true story began with Te'o's incredible performances after learning his grandmother and what he believed was his girlfriend had died within hours of one another in September. Te'o said it inspired him to play his best football all season, and it was so compelling that it helped turn Te'o into a Heisman Trophy contender as he was leading the Fighting Irish to an undefeated regular season and into the national championship game.

On Dec. 26, Te'o notified Notre Dame officials that he had received a call from his supposedly dead girlfriend's phone three weeks earlier.

The school investigated and on Jan. 16 — after Deadspin.com broke the story of the fake girlfriend — athletic director Jack Swarbrick announced at a news conference that Te'o had been duped. Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, 22, later said he created the online persona of Lennay Kekua, a nonexistent woman whom Te'o said he fell in love with despite never meeting her in person.

Te'o struggled in Notre Dame's blowout loss in the national championship game to Alabama and its offense full of future NFL draft picks. One of those players, right tackle D.J. Fluker, was drafted by the Chargers with the 11th overall pick Thursday night.

Te'o said everything he's gone through has increased his passion for the game because "that's my sanctuary, that's my fortress where I'm most comfortable. All it has done is made me look forward to when I'm back on that field again."

Te'o will get plenty of attention before he even plays a game with the Bolts.

"This is going to be a football team. He's going to have to deal with it," McCoy said. "The situation came up, he'll deal with that. People are going to have questions, OK? That's happened. He's going to learn from it, very similar to a lot of other people in life. You make a mistake from time to time, whatever that is, and you move on. You learn from it. It might come up at some point in time, but we'll deal with it however we need to. But he's one of ours now and he's going to help us win a championship here."

Te'o said going to the Chargers is "a perfect scenario. My parents can come and watch, I can go home, it's San Diego. We're all excited. I can't be any happier. Just looking forward to getting up there and getting this whole thing started.

"You talk about the Chargers, especially for a Samoan kid like me and you think of Junior Seau and what he did there and the legacy he left behind not only in San Diego but in the NFL," he said, mentioning the Chargers' late star linebacker.

A four-year starter and team captain, Te'o had 113 tackles, seven interceptions — the most ever in a season by a Fighting Irish linebacker — and 1½ sacks in 2012.

Te'o said he's going to be the same player in the pros as he was in college.

"I love the game, first and foremost. I'm a student of the game. I love to study film. I work hard. That's exactly what I'm going to be. I'm not going to change anything."

In the third round, the Chargers took Keenan Allen, California's all-time leading wide receiver, with the 76th pick overall.

The pick was unexpected, but certainly upgrades the position. He had 61 catches for 737 yards and six touchdowns for the Golden Bears last year, when he missed the final three games with a knee injury. He finished with 205 catches in three seasons. His 2,570 career yards were third in school history.

The Nets were just 8-of-27 shooting in the three overtimes after making 57.1 percent in regulation.

The Bulls took a 121-119 lead with two seconds left in the first overtime when Robinson hit a running one-hand bank shot.

Brooklyn forced the second overtime when Johnson hit a 10-footer as time expired, and Lopez forced the third by hitting one of two free throws with 48.7 seconds left in the second extra session.

Thunder 104, Rockets 101

Kevin Durant hit the go-ahead three pointer with 41.9 seconds left and matched his career playoff high with 41 points as visiting Oklahoma City overcame the loss of Russell Westbrook and held off a potent Houston charge to take a 3-0 lead in the Western Conference best-of-seven series.

Serge Ibaka added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Thunder and pressured Carlos Delfino into missing a tying 3-point attempt from the right corner as time expired.

Oklahoma City learned earlier Saturday that Westbrook is out for the postseason after undergoing knee surgery for an injury suffered in Game 2.

James Harden scored 30 points, Chandler Parsons added 21 and Francisco Garcia had 18 for the Rockets, who recovered from a 26-point first-half deficit to briefly take the lead in the final quarter.

Game 4 is Monday in Houston.

The Rockets trailed 78-62 with less than five minutes to go in the third quarter before catching fire to trail by four entering the final stanza.

Houston finally caught the Thunder at 91 on a three-pointer by Parsons with 5:45 left and took a 94-93 lead on a three-pointer by Delfino with 3:45 remaining.

Mike Conley added 15 points and 13 assists and Tayshaun Prince scored 15 points as the Grizzlies won their second straight game in the series. Game 5 is Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Blake Griffin had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Chris Paul scored 19 for the Clippers. Los Angeles shot just 41 percent from the field and was 4-for-21 from 3-point range.

The contest was tied at 62 late in the third quarter before Memphis went on a 14-5 surge to take a 76-67 lead on Quincy Pondexter's 3-pointer with 10:56 remaining.

A 3-pointer by Jamal Crawford had Los Angeles within six before Conley scored five points during a 12-0 spurt that gave the Grizzlies a 90-72 advantage with 5:31 left.

- - -

Hawks 90, Pacers 69

Al Horford recorded playoff career highs of 26 points and 16 rebounds as host Atlanta pulled within 2-1 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference series with Indiana.

Josh Smith scored 14 points and Jeff Teague added 13 for the Hawks, who put on a defensive display by holding the Pacers to 27.2 percent shooting.

Atlanta will try to even the series when it hosts Game 4 on Monday.

David West scored 18 points and Paul George had 16 for Indiana, which committed 22 turnovers.

The Hawks took control early, holding the Pacers to 23.8 percent shooting in the first half to take a 54-30 lead into the break.

The Hawks stretched the lead to as much as 75-47 late in the third quarter and the Pacers never mounted a serious comeback attempt. (Editing by Gene Cherry/Ian Ransom)

NBA-Highlights of Sunday's NBA playoffs games

(Recasts with Heat sweep)

April 28 (SportsDirect) - Highlights of Sunday's NBA playoffs games

- - -

Heat 88, Bucks 77

LeBron James had 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and visiting Miami pulled away in the fourth quarter to complete a four-game series sweep of Milwaukee.

Ray Allen scored 16 points off the bench and Udonis Haslem added 13 as the reigning NBA champions rolled into the Eastern Conference semi-finals despite playing without All-Star guard Dwyane Wade, who sat out with an ailing knee.

The Heat will play either Chicago or Brooklyn in the next round.

Monta Ellis scored 21 points and Mike Dunleavy chipped in 17 for the eighth-seeded Bucks, who followed the script of the previous two games by staying close through three quarters before the top-seeded Heat turned on the jets.

Miami led by as many as 11 points in the second quarter but Ellis scored seven straight points as Milwaukee cut the deficit to 45-41 at the half. The Bucks were within five at the end of three quarters and trailed by two with 9 1/2 minutes to play when the Heat delivered the knockout blows.

Allen buried a pair of three-pointers and Mario Chalmers and Shane Battier each connected from long range before James capped a 19-5 burst with a conventional three-point play to extend the lead to 86-72 with 4:54 remaining.

- - -

Celtics 97, Knicks 90 (overtime)

Reserve Jason Terry scored nine of his 18 points in the final 91 seconds of overtime as host Boston averted a four-game sweep despite blowing a 20-point second-half lead.

Paul Pierce scored 29 points and Jeff Green added 26 as the Celtics fought off a stirring comeback to force Game Five of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference series on Wednesday at New York's Madison Square Garden. Kevin Garnett added 13 points and 17 rebounds for Boston.

Carmelo Anthony scored 36 points and Raymond Felton had 27 for the Knicks, who led only once - at 84-82 with 1:18 to play in regulation - and trailed 59-39 with 9:25 left in the third quarter.

Terry put the Celtics ahead to stay by burying a three-pointer with 1:31 left in the extra session. After Anthony sliced the deficit to one, Terry hit a short jumper and buried two foul shots for a 95-90 edge with 20.4 seconds left.

Pierce scored eight points in a 73-second span late in the second quarter to help send the Celtics into the break with a seemingly commanding 54-35 lead. A three-pointer by Green pushed it to 20 early in the third quarter before Felton scored 16 points in a 26-9 burst to pull New York within 68-65 entering the final 12 minutes.

The Knicks played without Sixth Man of the Year J.R. Smith, who was suspended one game by the NBA for elbowing Terry in the face in the fourth quarter of Game Three. (Editing by Gene Cherry)

Draft was light on glamour, heavy on intrigue

Minnesota went all in with three first-round picks.

Super Bowl champion Baltimore went for replacements for Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.

The New York Jets added to their quarterback uncertainty by taking Geno Smith in the second round.

Teams loaded up on linemen, making the big and beefy guys this year's stars.

The 2013 NFL draft was light on glamour at the skill positions, but heavy on intrigue (when would Manti Te'o go?) and burly bodies able to either get after or protect all those pricey passers.

Denver Broncos boss John Elway called the draft "deep in the trenches.

"It wasn't sexy, but there were a lot of good football players in this draft, he said. "It was deep in the other-than-glitzy positions."

The first round included 18 linemen, one quarterback and, for the first time since 1963, no running backs.

"That's a lot of love for the big boys up front, which we usually don't get," said No. 1 overall pick Eric Fisher, an offensive tackle from Central Michigan taken by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Here's a breakdown:

VALIANT VIKINGS

Nobody made more noise in this year's draft than the Vikings.

Coming of a surprising run to the playoffs spearheaded by MVP Adrian Peterson, they became the first team since the Rams in 2001 to have three first-round picks. They traded four selections to New England to move up and take Tennessee receiver Cordarrelle Patterson after grabbing Florida defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd and Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes.

That's pushing all your chips into the center of the table.

"I don't think it could've worked out any better for the caliber of players we got coming into our program," Vikings GM Rick Spielman said after addressing three of his four major needs in a dizzying 30-minute span. "I'm very excited."

When the Vikings finally got back on the clock Saturday, Spielman addressed his other big need by grabbing Penn State linebackers Gerald Hodges in the fourth round and Michael Mauti in the seventh.

With that, Minnesota served notice that they're coming after Aaron Rodgers and everyone else in 2013.

QB CONUNDRUM

The Jets are testing out the old saying you can never have too many quarterbacks.

After Buffalo surprised nearly everyone by picking Florida State's EJ Manuel as the only QB in the first round (at No. 16), the Jets pulled off their own stunner by selecting West Virginia's Geno Smith in the second round, at No. 39.

Coach Rex Ryan's three-ring circus at QB now includes a half dozen passers. The others are Mark Sanchez, David Garrard, Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms.

"I hope they're all thinking, 'Hey, I have an opportunity to go win a job,'" Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said.

Smith certainly is.

"My goal is to be a franchise quarterback," he said. "But as of now, there's lots of work to be done."

Smith put up great numbers in college but also had accuracy issues and fumbled the ball an alarming 32 times, and scouts also questioned his overall skills and leadership in some pre-draft reports.

"You know what," Smith said, "critics don't have a pick."

SUPER SELECTIONS

Will the Harbaugh brothers be making plans for another family reunion in February? Both Baltimore and San Francisco restocked for another Super Bowl run.

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome launched a defensive makeover after Lewis retired and Reed led a free agency exodus following their title, signing with Houston. Newsome used his first four picks and six of 10 selections on defenders, beginning with safety Matt Elam and linebacker Arthur Brown, who have some huge cleats to fill.

San Francisco's 11-player haul included defensive back Eric Reid, defensive end Tank Carradine and tight end Vance McDonald, but the most intriguing pick was that of fourth-rounder Marcus Lattimore. The South Carolina running back suffered a career-threatening right knee injury last season just one year after tearing ligaments in his left knee.

San Francisco took a similar gamble several years ago when it spent a third-round selection on Frank Gore, who had suffered torn ligaments in each of his knees a year apart at the University of Miami, but has made the Pro Bowl four times and is the franchise's all-time leading rusher.

"I love the aggressive mental approach he has taken through this whole process, but we're going to slow down the aggressive physical things and make sure Marcus is 100 percent healthy before he goes out there on the field," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "If he doesn't play this year, then he doesn't play this year."

REMAKING ROSTERS

The heavy turnover after last season — eight new coaches and seven new general managers — meant there were plenty of newbies making draft decisions.

Led by the Chiefs new brain trust of coach Andy Reid and GM John Dorsey, eight of the top 11 picks were made by teams that had turnover at the decision-making positions as the Jaguars, Eagles, Browns, Cardinals, Bills, Jets and Chargers also had a first-year coach and/or general manager.

Of those, the biggest splash was made by the Bills when GM Buddy Nix gave new coach Doug Marrone a new QB by trading out of the eighth spot and selecting Florida State's Manuel.

"If we can develop this guy, he has the talent to take you to the dance," Nix said.

Other than the decision to take a chance on Manti Te'o in the second round, the Chargers rookie tandem of GM Tom Telesco and coach Mike McCoy added right tackle D.J. Fluker of Alabama with the 11th pick and Cal wide receiver Keenan Allen in the third round, two players who should help embattled QB Philip Rivers right away.

BUSTS OR BRONZE

For all the money and hours spent watching tape and workouts, evaluating players' bodies and minds, recording height, weight, speed and strength, the draft remains an inexact science. There will be first-round busts like always and maybe some undrafted guys end up with bronze busts in Canton, Ohio.

"You never really know because you're dealing with humans," Elway said.

The Broncos have had at least one college free agent make the 53-man roster coming out of camp every year since 2004, but it's going to be hard for any of Denver's 15 undrafted additions to make it this year after Denver loaded up in free agency and the draft after a 13-3 season.

Elway wasn't called on to close the sale on any of the free agent candidates. He learned his lesson when he bought his first car dealership many years ago and a salesman called him in to seal the deal.

"So I go in and the guy says, 'You've got a lot more money than I do. Why would I want to pay you $1,000?" Elway recounted. "I said, 'OK, you can have it for $500.'

"So, ever since then, I've stayed out of the negotiating business."

AP source: Stars hire Nill to replace Nieuwendyk

The Dallas Stars have chosen Jim Nill to replace fired general manager Joe Nieuwendyk, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday night because the move hadn't been announced.

Dallas fired Nieuwendyk on Sunday after four seasons with two coaches and no playoff appearances. The Stars finished their season 22-22-4 Saturday without earning a spot in the playoffs for the fifth season in a row.

Nill has helped the Detroit Red Wings extend their postseason streak to 22 straight appearances. He was Detroit's assistant general manager for 15 seasons and has worked for the franchise's front office since 1994.

The Stars have scheduled a news conference for Monday to announce their new general manager. The team has refused to comment on reports that Nill would be Nieuwendyk's replacement.

"Joe Nieuwendyk has represented the Dallas Stars extremely well as the club's general manager and has helped put pieces in place that will once again turn this team into a contender," owner Tom Gaglardi said in a statement.

"However, I believe it is time to take this organization in a different direction with our intentions set on returning to the elite of the National Hockey League. ... I am confident we have found the right general manager to return us to the pathway of success."

Nill led the Red Wings' amateur scouting department and oversaw decisions made at the NHL draft. While working for the franchise, the Red Wings won four Stanley Cups between 1997 and 2008.

The native of Hanna, Alberta, played in 524 NHL games for St. Louis, Vancouver, Boston, Winnipeg and Detroit and had 58 goals and 87 assists in his career. He was an amateur and pro scout for the Ottawa Senators for three seasons before being hired by the Red Wings.

The future of coach Glen Gulutzan wasn't addressed by the team.

Dallas holds a contract option for a third season for Gulutzan, who is 64-57-9 in his two seasons after ending the lockout-shortened regular season with a 3-0 home loss to Detroit. The Stars dropped their last five games, and won only once in their last seven after a five-game winning streak.

When asked about his job security after Saturday night's game, Gulutzan said that wasn't under his control and that he'd continue to work for the Stars until told otherwise. He also praised Nieuwendyk.

"All I can say is that Joe's been tremendous for me. I think he's done a hell of a job," Gulutzan said. "You can see with our farm team and the young guys that we have here."

As a player in Dallas, Nieuwendyk won the Conn Smythe Award as playoff MVP in 1999 when the Stars won their only Stanley Cup.

When hired by Nieuwendyk two years ago to replace the fired Marc Crawford, the 41-year-old Gulutzan had never coached in the NHL. Gulutzan had been a successful minor league coach, including two seasons with the Texas Stars, the team's primary AHL affiliate.

The Stars weren't officially eliminated from the playoff chase until Thursday night, while playing their second-to-last game. They managed to stay in postseason contention even after longtime captain Brenden Morrow was traded, a week before 41-year-old points leader Jaromir Jagr and Derek Roy were dealt away at the trading deadline.

Dallas got several young players and extra draft picks in those deals.

Within days after Jagr and Roy were traded, the young Stars went on a season-best five-game winning streak.

Morrow waived his no-trade clause to go to Pittsburgh, which entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. Morrow's rookie season in Dallas was 1999-2000, when the Stars were Stanley Cup runners-up a year after their title.

Te'o thinks he's 'pretty prepared' for NFL

SAN DIEGO (AP) — After dealing with the commotion over his fake online girlfriend and his flop in the national championship game, Manti Te'o believes he's ready for the NFL.

That includes being mentally tough enough for the verbal abuse he'll surely hear in places like Oakland and Philadelphia, the San Diego Chargers' first road game next season. Te'o said Saturday that he's been through a lot and he's ready.

The Chargers' rookie brain trust, general manager Tom Telesco and coach Mike McCoy, said they weren't bothered by the scrutiny Te'o has been under the last four months. The Chargers traded up in the second round to pick the Notre Dame linebacker, who was the Heisman Trophy runner-up.

NBA-Goudelock's fairytale Lakers start has grim ending

By Mark Lamport-Stokes

LOS ANGELES, April 27 (Reuters) - It could have been a perfect Cinderella story for guard Andrew Goudelock on his first NBA start for the Los Angeles Lakers, and he certainly did his part with an electrifying performance during the first half.

By the time it was all over, though, the injury-depleted Lakers had been crushed 120-89 by the San Antonio Spurs in Friday's Game Three at the Staples Center to trail 0-3 in their best-of-seven first-round playoff series.

Goudelock, who only two weeks ago was playing in the NBA's development league, finished with 20 points on eight-of-17 shooting but he expressed bitter-sweet feelings after the Lakers had slipped to their heaviest ever home playoff defeat.

"I felt good about how I played individually but I never like to lose like that," the 24-year-old Goudelock told Reuters while sitting in front of his locker after his team had been outshot by a staggering 61 percent to 43 from the field.

"That was just embarrassing. When you lose like that on national television in the playoffs in that type of fashion where it's not even a game, it definitely takes away from what I did personally.

"But it's part of the game. It happens like that sometimes and we've got a new type of team. I think I showed a little bit of something I can do and, moving forward, maybe it will give me a little more confidence."

Goudelock, who re-signed with the Lakers just two weeks ago after five-time NBA champion Kobe Bryant suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury, only knew he was in the starting lineup shortly before Friday's tip-off.

Injuries had left the Lakers without their top four guards in Bryant, Steve Nash, Steve Blake and Jodie Meeks and Goudelock suddenly found himself front and center in the high intensity of playoff action after being plucked from relative obscurity.

Having been presented with the NBA development league's most valuable player trophy for the 2012-13 season moments before the start of Game Three, Goudelock thrilled Lakers fans as he scored 14 points in the first half.

SPARKED THE FANS

He poured in back-to-back three-pointers midway through the second quarter to spark chants of "MVP, MVP, MVP!" from the home crowd and helped his team finish a 14-7 run to trim the deficit to 55-44 by halftime.

"That felt good," the six-foot three-inch (1.92 metres) guard from College of Charleston said of his form against the second-seeded Spurs, especially during the opening half.

"That's something I have dreamed about for a long time, to do that in a Lakers uniform on national television.

"It's the most minutes I have played and the most points I have scored. It definitely felt good, and especially with my parents here. I haven't seen them in about a year."

Against the Spurs, however, the Lakers ran into a razor-sharp shooting team where All-Stars Tim Duncan, with a game-high 26 points, and Tony Parker, with 20, barely missed.

"They got a lot of easy shots, easy opportunities," said Goudelock, who was nicknamed "Mini-Mamba" for his own scoring exploits last season despite played sparingly for the Lakers in 40 games.

"We worked really hard but they got a lot of wide open shots, layups. They got basically whatever they wanted, and we didn't do anything to stop them from being so comfortable.

"You're not going to win like that in the playoffs. In the first half, I think we did a pretty good job but then it just got away from us."

No NBA team has ever come back from a 0-3 deficit to win a playoff series but Goudelock described Lakers team morale as "okay" as they prepare for Sunday's Game Four, also at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.

"It's tough but the spirit is still up," Goudelock said. "It's never over. You never give up until it's over so we still have something to play for. We just have to make some adjustments and we'll be okay on Sunday." (Reporting by Mark Lamport-Stokes; Editing by Gene Cherry)

USC's Barkley, 3 other QBs picked in 4th round

NEW YORK (AP) — Finally, it was the draft of the quarterback.

Saturday's fourth round of the NFL draft featured a shopping spree for signal callers, beginning with the opening pick of Southern California's Matt Barkley, taken by Philadelphia after a trade with Jacksonville.

Yes, it was three rounds later than Barkley hoped for. Same thing for Ryan Nassib of Syracuse, Landry Jones of Oklahoma and Tyler Wilson of Arkansas, the other quarterbacks chosen early Saturday.

"We're going to take the best value on the board," coach Chip Kelly said, adding the Eagles rated Barkley in the top 50. "There's a prime example. The best value on the board by far was Matt. He's an extremely mature young man, intelligent, articulate. He has that 'it' factor."

Perhaps. But he seemed to have a lot more of it last year. Barkley was projected as a first-round selection last year, but opted to return to school. He and the Trojans slumped, Barkley injured his shoulder, and his stock plummeted.

"I try not to get stressed about things I can't control," Barkley said when asked about his drop in the draft. "I'm just glad I know where my home is and I can't wait to hit the playbook."

He will join quarterbacks Michael Vick and Nick Foles in Philadelphia.

The New York Giants, hardly in need of a quarterback with Eli Manning in his prime, still dealt with Arizona to move up for Nassib.

Oakland, which acquired Matt Flynn from Seattle in the offseason to be its starter, followed two picks later at No. 112 overall with Wilson. Three spots after that, Pittsburgh grabbed Jones, probably hoping to groom him behind Ben Roethlisberger.

National champion Alabama, which had four players chosen previously — three in the first round — saw linebacker Nico Johnson go to Kansas City with the pick after Barkley was taken. Crimson Tide guard Barrett Jones, who can play all offensive line positions, was taken by the Rams midway in the fourth round.

Avalanche fire coach Joe Sacco

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche have fired coach Joe Sacco a day after the team missed the playoffs for the third straight season.

General manager Greg Sherman says in a news release Sunday the "organization believes a change of leadership behind the bench is needed going forward."

Colorado never got on track in the lockout-shortened season and finished last in the Western Conference.

Sacco was hired in 2009 after coaching in the minors. He preached an up-tempo style and it served the youthful Avalanche well in his first season as the team earned a postseason spot. But the team couldn't duplicate that success.

Sacco will lead the U.S. squad at the world championships later this week. Sacco will even take several Avalanche players with him, including Paul Stastny and Erik Johnson.

NBA-National Basketball Association roundup

April 28 (The Sports Xchange) - The Los Angeles Lakers were in the middle of a 2011 second-round playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks when former coach Phil Jackson told the team he was diagnosed with prostate cancer two months earlier.

Jackson talked about his condition, which was diagnosed in March 2011, and his announcement to the players in his upcoming book, "Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success."

According to a report in the Orange County Register, Jackson "sensed the team was lacking something" in the series with the Mavericks when he revealed his news after consulting with captains Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher.

The Lakers were swept out of the playoffs by the eventual champion Mavericks.

Jackson, 67, retired as Lakers coach after the team was eliminated from the playoffs that season, but rumors have surfaced recently that he is interested in returning to work, possibly in a front-office position with an NBA team.

Inbee Park wins North Texas LPGA, 3rd win in '13

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Inbee Park shot a bogey-free 4-under 67 on Sunday to win the inaugural North Texas LPGA Shootout by a stroke over Carlota Ciganda, whose chance for a first LPGA victory was wiped out in a two-hole stretch.

Park, the world's No. 1 women's player, finished at 13-under 271 for her third victory this season and fifth in her last 18 starts. The 24-year-old South Korean sank a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole.

After starting the day two strokes behind Ciganda, Park went ahead to stay with consecutive pars on Nos. 14 and 15. Ciganda had bogey and double bogeys on those holes, part of her 70.

Suzann Pettersen, the winner in Hawaii last week, had a closing 66 to get to 10 under and finish third.

Packers sign Rodgers to $110M contract extension

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — This ought to give Aaron Rodgers better memories of the NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers signed their franchise quarterback Friday to a five-year contract extension through the 2019 season, eight years after they stopped his slide down the draft board and took him with the 24th pick in the first round.

The deal, according to a person with knowledge of the contract who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team has not released the details, is worth as much as $110 million, with $40 million guaranteed. The $22 million annual average of the extension is the highest salary in NFL history, slightly trumping the $120.6 million that the Baltimore Ravens gave quarterback Joe Flacco last month over six years.

"I'm excited to know my future is here and I'll be here for a lot longer," Rodgers said inside the locker room at Lambeau Field.

Locking up Rodgers was a priority for the Packers, who also reached a long-term extension with linebacker Clay Matthews this month worth as much as $66 million over five years. The Packers are 53-27 in five years with Rodgers as the starter, and he led them to the Super Bowl title following the 2010 season.

"An exciting day for our football program," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "Aaron is an excellent illustration of a Green Bay Packer. It is truly a blessing to witness his continued accomplishments, both on and off the field."

Rodgers has thrown for 21,661 yards and 171 touchdowns, and he has had a quarterback rating of 101.2 or better in all but one season as a starter. His quarterback rating of 122.5 in 2011 is an NFL record.

The finalization of the extension, which was worked on for the last few months, came on the same late-April weekend on which Rodgers was snubbed by almost every other team in the NFL draft. A standout at Cal, Rodgers was expected to be taken early in the first round in 2005. But he soon found himself alone in the green room.

Rodgers acknowledged that prove-the-doubters-wrong attitude he's used to his benefit throughout his career since that day he was ignored by so many in the draft.

"I have a good memory, and I'm driven to be the best," Rodgers said. "Obviously, there's a couple less critics out there now, but I still put a lot of pressure on myself to achieve the goals I set for myself here and enjoy trying to meet the challenge that those goals bring and also opposing teams bring."

Draft day wasn't the only rough spot for Rodgers in his career.

He arrived in Green Bay as the backup to Brett Favre, who wasn't thrilled the team had found his heir apparent. Favre kept fans and the franchise on their toes every offseason from then on, flirting with the idea of retiring but always coming back. When the tension finally snapped in 2008 — Favre retired, changed his mind and asked for his job back — Rodgers found himself in the middle of the most-bitter divorce in Wisconsin history.

Favre was traded to the New York Jets during training camp, but many fans remained loyal to him. They took their anger at the organization out on Rodgers, even booing him at the team's "Family Night" scrimmage. Rodgers kept his composure, never firing back at fans or even publicly criticizing Favre.

Rodgers played well in his first year as a starter. Despite a 6-10 record, he showed flashes of why general manager Ted Thompson had such faith in him, and fans began to come around. Any lingering animosity disappeared after he led the Packers to the playoffs following the 2009 season, and he's now one of the most beloved figures in Wisconsin sports history. The Wisconsin Legislature designated Dec. 12, 2012, as "Aaron Rodgers Day," and students and workers throughout the state were encouraged to celebrate by wearing his jersey.

When he was shown on the scoreboard at the Milwaukee Bucks' playoff game against the Miami Heat on Thursday, he got one of the biggest cheers of the night.

Rodgers holds four of Green Bay's top five single-season marks for passer rating (2009-12) and two of the top three for passing TDs (2011-12). He also has three of the top four records for completion percentage (2010-12) and two of the top three for passing yards (2009, 2011).

Rodgers will be 36 when the deal ends. He said he thinks he has at least eight years left in his legs and his body, when asked if wondered if this would be his last contract.

"A lot of times you don't see a deal all the way through if you're playing well. It's just the nature of some of these contracts. That's a long way off. In order to even get to that conversation, it's going to take many years in a row at a consistently high level of play for me, which I expect to do," Rodgers said. "And I'm going to get myself in the best shape mentally and physically to do that, and hopefully we can have that conversation in seven years where I can still play and maybe we can keep this thing going."

Zimmermann blanks Reds on 1 hit in Nats' 1-0 win

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jordan Zimmermann was terrific in his second complete game of the season and the Washington Nationals limited the Cincinnati Reds to one hit for the second straight game in a 1-0 victory on Friday night.

Zimmermann (4-1) struck out four and walked one while improving to 3-0 with a 1.36 ERA in five career games against Cincinnati. The right-hander needed only 91 pitches to record his third career complete game.

It was the first time the Reds managed just one hit in consecutive games since July 5-6, 1900, against Brooklyn, according to research by the Elias Sports Bureau that the team provided. The Houston Astros from Sept. 14-15, 2008, were the last team with such a streak.

Xavier Paul led off the third with a single to center for Cincinnati's only hit off Zimmermann. The other baserunners came when Todd Frazier reached on an error by first baseman Adam LaRoche in the fifth and Corky Miller walked in the eighth.

Washington won the first game of the series when Gio Gonzalez pitched eight innings of one-hit ball in an 8-1 victory on Thursday night. Joey Votto homered for Cincinnati's only hit in this one.

Homer Bailey (1-2) was nearly as good as Zimmermann, pitching seven crisp innings for the Reds. He allowed one run and six hits, struck out six and walked none.

The Nationals' only run came in the third. Bryce Harper tripled to right and scored on Jayson Werth's single to right.

That was enough for Zimmermann, who is 8-0 with a 3.02 ERA in his last 14 regular-season home starts.

NOTES: LaRoche was hitless in three at-bats. He's mired in an 0-for-19 slump. ... Reds manager Dusty Baker said RHP Johnny Cueto, on the disabled list with a pulled muscle in his back, is not close to returning. ... Washington manager Davey Johnson said he hopes 3B Ryan Zimmerman, on the DL with a hamstring strain, will soon be able to go on a rehab assignment. He could be reactivated next weekend. Rookie Anthony Rendon, who was called up to play third while Zimmerman was out, was on the bench for the second straight games. He's just 2 for 15.

Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

April 26 (The Sports Xchange) - Miami Marlins owner Jeff Loria's meddling with the lineup is angering players, Yahoo Sports! reported Friday.

Loria reportedly mandated that first-year manager Mike Redmond flip-flop starting pitchers Jose Fernandez and Ricky Nolasco for Tuesday's doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins, with 20-year-old Fernandez pitching in the first game. Apparently, the switch angered several players, including Nolasco.

When Redmond told Nolasco about the change 2 1/2 hours before the first game, the pitcher was reportedly not happy about it. Typically, veterans get to choose which games of a doubleheader they prefer to pitch, a protocol that Loria ignored.

Loria attempted to force lineup changes last year when Ozzie Guillen managed the team. However, Guillen, a veteran manager, defied Loria's meddling.

The Marlins are off to a league-worst 5-17 record and have scored a league-low 57 runs.

Chargers take Manti Te'o in 2nd round of NFL draft

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A hoax involving a fake girlfriend and a poor performance in the national championship game didn't scare the San Diego Chargers away from picking Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o in the second round of the NFL draft Friday.

Rookie general manager Tom Telesco traded with Arizona to move up seven spots and select Te'o with the 38th pick overall.

Te'o dropped into the second round for a number of reasons, including being tricked into a relationship with a girl that didn't exist, struggling in the national championship game against Alabama and its offense full of future NFL draft picks, and some slow offseason workouts.

One of those Crimson Tide stars, right tackle D.J. Rucker, was selected by the Chargers with the 11th pick overall Thursday night.

The Chargers need inside linebackers because Takeo Spikes was released and Demorrio Williams is a free agent.

Two officials, each with a different team, said their clubs passed on Te'o in the first round partly because of his off-field issues. The men, speaking on condition of anonymity because team draft strategy is confidential, said the decision was not just because of a disappointing combine performance or the linebacker's poor performance in the national title game.

The Heisman Trophy runnerup became the butt of national jokes after it was revealed he was duped into an Internet romance he had with a girlfriend he never met.

Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, 22, later said he created the online persona of Lennay Kekua, a nonexistent woman who Te'o said he fell in love with despite never meeting her in person.
