April 25 (SportsDirect) - Highlights of Thursday's Major League Baseball games

Red Sox 7, Astros 2

Red-hot David Ortiz had three hits and hit his first homer of the season while Clay Buchholz struck out 10 and became the first five-game winner in baseball as host Boston won the opener of the four-game series.

Buchholz (5-0) allowed two runs and six hits, and retired 11 straight batters before Jose Altuve ended his night with a two-out single in the eighth.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ortiz had two RBIs apiece - one each in a four-run first inning - for first-place Boston, who are 11-0 when scoring first.

Yankees 5, Blue Jays 3

Robinson Cano hit one of three New York home runs and Hiroki Kuroda overcame a shaky start to throw six strong innings in a win over visiting Toronto.

Kuroda (3-1) and three relievers limited Toronto to one hit over the final seven innings, capped by Mariano Rivera's seventh save.

Jayson Nix went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Ichiro Suzuki added two hits and stole his first base of the season.

Mark Buehrle (1-1) continued his struggles against the Yankees, surrendering five runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. The veteran left-hander fell to 1-9 all-time against New York.

Toronto manager John Gibbons was ejected for the second straight day after arguing a reversal of a call at first base.

Dodgers 3, Mets 2

Andre Ethier and Juan Uribe had RBI singles in the top of the ninth inning and visiting Los Angeles held on to win in the rubber match at Citi Field.

With the score tied 1-1 and a runner on third with one out in the ninth, New York elected to intentionally walk Matt Kemp and Ethier responded by hitting a 3-1 offering from left-hander Scott Rice (1-1) to right field to score Nick Punto.

Uribe followed with a run-scoring infield hit to make it 3-1, which proved vital when Ike Davis led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo shot.

The two-run Dodgers ninth made a winner of Kenley Jansen (1-0), who stranded a pair of runners in the eighth after starter Ryu Hyun-jin yielded one run on three hits while striking out eight in seven stellar innings.

Pirates 6, Phillies 4

Pinch hitter Garrett Jones belted a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning and Gaby Sanchez recorded three RBIs as visiting Pittsburgh rallied to beat Philadelphia.

Jones' bases-loaded double with one out off reliever Phillippe Aumont (1-3) gave the Pirates a 5-3 lead and Sanchez followed with a sacrifice fly.

Sanchez also had a solo homer and an RBI single to help hand the victory to reliever Justin Wilson (2-0), who pitched two hitless innings.

Tony Watson pitched the final two innings for his first career save as Pittsburgh took three of four to win its first series in Philadelphia since 2003.

Royals 8, Tigers 3 (10)

George Kottaras drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the go-ahead run before Alex Gordon launched a grand slam as visiting Kansas City earned a split of the rain-shortened two-game series.

Gordon clubbed his first career slam off Darin Downs one out after Phil Coke (0-3) walked his third batter of the inning along with throwing a wild pitch to send Detroit to its fifth defeat in six games.

Tim Collins (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless inning before closer Greg Holland retired all three batters in the 10th for the Royals.

Tigers ace Justin Verlander allowed two runs - one earned - on eight hits before leaving after seven innings with cracked skin on his right thumb.

- - - -

Nationals 8, Reds 1

Gio Gonzalez allowed one run on one hit in eight innings as host Washington snapped a four-game slide in the series opener against Cincinnati.

Danny Espinosa and Denard Span drove in three runs apiece and Bryce Harper homered and doubled in support of Gonzalez (2-1), who let up only a solo homer to Joey Votto and two walks while striking out seven.

Bronson Arroyo (2-2) was tagged for six runs in six innings for the Reds, who have scored two runs on two solo shots in their last two games.

- - - -

Cubs 4, Marlins 3

Nate Schierholtz hit a tying home run off the right-field foul pole in the sixth and Luis Valbuena blasted a game-winning homer into the right-field bullpen in the ninth as visiting Chicago claimed the opener of the four-game series.

The Cubs' maligned bullpen combined for three scoreless innings with Shawn Camp (1-1) pitching a perfect eighth for the win and Carlos Marmol working out of a jam in the ninth for his second save after Valbuena cranked a first-pitch sinker from Steve Cishek (1-3) into the Marlins' bullpen to break a 3-3 tie.

Miami had the first two men on in the ninth, but the Cubs cut down the lead runner on Juan Pierre's sacrifice bunt attempt and Marmol got a fly ball from Placido Polanco and struck out Giancarlo Stanton.

White Sox 5, Rays 2

Chris Sale worked seven strong innings and Adam Dunn homered as Chicago took the opener of a four-game series from visiting Tampa Bay.

Jeff Keppinger doubled in a run and Paul Konerko and Conor Gillaspie each added an RBI during a three-run first inning for the White Sox, who have won back-to-back games after dropping four straight.

Sale (2-2) allowed two runs and four hits while matching a season high with seven strikeouts.

Rangers 2, Twins 1

Nick Tepesch allowed one earned run in 6 2/3 innings as visiting Texas took the opener of the four-game series.

Tepesch (2-1), who was making his fourth major league start, allowed five hits, did not walk a batter and made just one mistake, a solo home run by Josh Willingham in the seventh that cut the deficit to 2-1.

Ian Kinsler had three hits and Nelson Cruz had two hits and an RBI to lead the Rangers.

Diamondbacks 3, Rockies 2

Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer as Arizona began a seven-game homestand with its fourth victory in five games.

Trevor Cahill (1-3) allowed an unearned run, four hits, walked four and struck out six in five innings for the Diamondbacks.

Wil Nieves had three hits and an RBI single while J.J. Putz worked around a two-out walk in the ninth for his fourth save in seven chances.

Mariners 6, Angels 0

Kyle Seager homered and had three RBIs and Brandon Maurer pitched 6-1/3 shutout innings as Seattle beat Los Angeles.

Jason Bay had a two-run single and Carlos Peguero homered as the Mariners won for only the third time in 10 games.

Maurer (2-3) allowed seven hits and one walk and struck out six.

The Angels' Albert Pujols started at first base for the first time since April 15 after recovering from a foot injury and went 1-for-4.

- - - -

Orioles 10, Athletics 2

Chris Davis belted his eighth home run and Jason Hammel tossed six strong innings as Baltimore routed Oakland in the opener of the four-game series.

The Orioles trailed early after Josh Donaldson's two-run double in the second before scoring three runs in the third off Jarrod Parker (0-4), who gave up six runs over 5-1/3 innings.

Nate McLouth and Nick Markakis had two hits and two RBIs each for Baltimore, which have won six of their last eight.

Oakland, who have lost eight of 12 since winning nine in a row, were outhit 15-6.
