March 6 (The Sports Xchange) - New York Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera is set to retire after the 2013 season. The team has scheduled a press conference for Saturday morning to announce the move, multiple media outlets reported Thursday.
A likely first-ballot Hall of Famer, the 43-year-old Rivera is a 12-time All-Star who played on five World Series championship teams. The career saves leader with 608, Rivera has blown only 39 saves in his career, and he's posted a 2.21 ERA with 1,119 strikeouts in 1,219 2/3 innings.
Rivera may have retired after the 2012 season, but he suffered a season-ending torn ACL in May, and he likely wanted to exit on his own terms.

The Chicago White Sox and pitcher Chris Sale have agreed to a five-year, $32.5 million contract extension, the team announced.
The deal includes two club options that could escalate the deal to about $60 million. The lefty went 17-8 with a 3.05 ERA in his first season as a starter, and he made the All-Star Game. He spent the 2011 season as a member of the bullpen.

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal is likely to miss the entire season after opting for Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ligament in his elbow.
Peter Kozma is expected to be the starting shortstop this season, as Furcal's recovery time is projected at seven to eight months.
